Police rarely ever protect people or actually prevent a crime. They are merely there for clean-up duty and report writing.
We must be proactive and protect ourselves and our community.

They can prevent people from being hurt if they get to a scene with trouble in time, such as if someone is waving a gun around and threatening people but hasn't shot anyone yet.

However you're right in the sense that people have to take responsibility for their own safety and not rely on anyone else to do that for them.

I was recently assaulted and the police were so slow in responding, the perp got away....have my SKS on layaway as we speak.
